2 stroke engines – Patrizio,s real passion !

The conventional 2 stroke engine was (and is) an absolute mechanical marvel – the fact that such a simple, lightweight engine can produce the power that it does – almost double the power of a similar sized 4 stroke engine. This is due to the fact that what takes the 4 stroke engine, 4 strokes, or cycles, to do, the 2 stroke can do in just 2 cycles! Thats not including other delicious attributes such as the sound, the smell and the power delivery…

However, there is a balancing act to be had which results in additional maintenance. The common modern two stroke engine needs, on average, a change of piston rings every 5000 miles, and a new piston and rings set every 10,000 miles. Obviously this varies with the exact engine, and it’s maintenance schedule.

New two strokes are becoming more of a rarity nowadays, due to emissions laws however we are finding that they are attracting a growing crowd. 4 stroke engines

The 4 stroke motor is a reliable piece of kit – so long as it has been taken care of properly – operative word is care !

Most bikers would (or should) know that (depending on make and model), the valve clearances need adjusting, to ensure that timing of the opening and closing of the valves happens when it should. This is critical for performance and optimum running of the engine. This comes part of a major valve clearances service, which we offer. With modern engines running higher and higher rpm this area cant be over looked.

However, due to the multiple valves present in four stroke engines, cam-chains (or belts in a range of bikes) are important. These are responsible for timing the valve openings and closings – catastrophic engine failure could occur should this go wrong.

Aside from adjusting the valve clearances, and replacing cam-chains/belts, we can also overhaul your engine, a complete rebuild up , or diagnose/repair other issues that you may have.

Trackday engines

Needless to say, if you use your motorcycle on the track, your engine will have been put through much more strain than the average commuter or weekend rider. Hotter running tempretures including your oil, sustained higher revs etc. Therefore, your bike will need too undergo much more rigorous servicing than the average bike….oil changes every 2 trackdays preferably every trackday…shims checked and adjusted once a year, and if you have belts (Ducati owners pay attention) consider twice a year !…i think your getting the picture….?
