4 Stroke Tuning Since 1998 we have covered most aspects of 4 stroke tuning, repairs and modification.
4 Stroke Tuning can be seen in our our own Ducati 853 RS which has been completely re-built and extensively improved, covering raised compression, flowed heads, titanium rods, machine work and lots of electronic and chassis mods …. 140.1 bhp at the wheel!
Many bikers think that because their new bike is fuel injected that it somehow knows or can detect that you have fitted a full system. It doesn’t in fact as fuel injected bikes are set up far more accurately from the factory, there is a far smaller range of fuelling flexibility as opposed to carbs. 4 Stroke Tuning in general and Motorbike tuning is becoming more and more technical as power is now being controlled in most cases by an ECU.
It means that fitting power enhancing parts, filters, exhausts etc will tip the fuelling over the edge and make it run lean (assuming the parts are any good), which in turn will create lean spots, poor response and can even melt a piston due to detonation.
The average road rider might just be looking to make their engine a little sharper and more responsive, so we can provide a light tune – focusing on intake and exhaust flow, and dealing with the noise and emissions equipment – in most cases this is all that’s needed.
Now days most modern sportsbikes are in a high state of tune as they leave the manufacturer, but there are always areas to improve within a mass-produced engine which is where 4 Stroke Tuning comes in. In many instances it’s the sum of lots of small, marginal gains that matter but cylinder-head porting and cam re-profiling can make big differences to an engine’s output and feel.
Sometimes, especially on the road, the requirement is for much stronger mid-range drive with outright horsepower less important;
Often an improved, well-balanced delivery is more suitable and ridability and feelis the goal.
In these cases moving power down the rev-range is achieved by re-timing the inlet and exhaust camshafts, completely transforming an engine’s feel and drivability in real-world situations away from a racetrack.
Tolerances for a full race engine, especially in term of squish and cam profile, valve duration and overlap are much tighter than you’d use for the road. It’s an exact science that rewards both patience and experience and our aim when tuning an engine is always to reliably meet, deliver and where possible exceed, expectations.
Our motorbike tuning scope does not end there. We are quiet happy dealing with older bikes running carbs, which certainly need setting up from time to time to keep them running as they should. Even rarer today is two stroke bikes…a black art to say the least with very few people catering for the few that are still on the road/…but even these beauties can be tuned and we have the nessesary skills and experience to tackle these wonderful machines and keep you on the road.
